I had to fire two employees for cause this past week. Although they really left me no choice, it is difficult to let go of long time employees even if they fucked up.

The first one got caught manipulating her time card for extra hours. Before you ask, yes, it is entirely possible she had been getting away with it for six years she has been with me before it was noticed by a busy body fellow employee.

The second was pissed off at me for not giving her the promotion she wanted several months ago and proceeded to tell my new hire how much the company sucks, how "clicky" the staff it and how she can't wait to find a new job and get out of there.

I simply helped her along on her quest.

I let them both go the same day. Dealing with one teary eyed worker is enough, two was a bit too much even for the likes of me.

Friday is our staff meeting and I can tell you this right now; there is a lot of tossing and turning going on this night with the less than stellar employees. If nothing else I think I succeeded in letting them know that, while I try to treat people well and fairly, if you do not show me respect, I won't be keeping you on.

No matter how long you've gotten away with it been with the company.

In keeping with my being a bitch boss, my web site of the week are some bad boss stories. When I read these, I feel a little better about these two women trying to figure out how they are going to pay their rent next month.

You are a tough cookie. You get fired for talking smack about the company? I do that all the time. I think I am respected for my honesty. ;-)

Nothing like a couple of firings to get everyone else in shape. Works like a charm. I don't envy you being the one having to do it, but jobs are gold now...and if someone is dishonest or they hate their jobs that much...there are plenty of good, decent hard-working people who would LOVE to do it instead. We have about 5 or 6 of them at work that are so lazy they stink but they're protected by the union...it makes me sick because they don't even need their jobs; they are old enough to retire and get benefits. Just sitting there taking the job away from a younger person who has a family to support. Hope you get some good ones this time. ^5

If you have to keep firing people pretty soon you will have no one left....

Maybe I am tough Karen but to pollute someone who just walked in the door is unacceptable to me. Bitch all you want but let people come up with their own opinions. There were other issues too, like her bad attitude as she made it perfectly clear when asked to do something that she did not want to be there anymore.

I agree Val which is what is so surprising to me about people screwing up. Everyone knows I get hundreds of applicants for each job I post and yet they still think they are untouchable due to their seniority.

Doc, sometimes starting fresh isn't such a bad thing. I hope it doesn't come to that though. Most everyone else is really happy so I think Im good for a while. I hope anyway.

I agree that jobs are valuable and when employees start thinking they can't be touched and can do whatever they want, well, it's time for a wake up call. Keeps everyone else from being complacent.

Maybe I need to be fired. Force me to go find something that doesn't make me want to slit my wrists. Wait. I like my job, I just hate my boss.

I have found that when working in an office where 2 people are axed in one day - you better be DAMN sure you make yourself indispensable - here's to hoping some of your other employees feel that way.

For what it's worth, these people did ask to be fired. You were just fulfilling their wish. Sometimes we all need to be pushed in order to get on with our lives.

Sorry you had a rough day.... It helps to weed out the troublemakers. Makes the other employees think twice about crossing lines.

I've owned my business since '93 and I have fired several along the way. I too, used to feel bad about letting someone go (still don't enjoy it) until I realized, I'm not firing them, they are firing themselves. One thing that certainly doesn't work on me is tears. If you're so upset now, then why weren't you just as upset when I gave you multiple warnings that your job was in jeopardy IF things didn't turn around...and then you went on doing things just how you had before? And..believe me, it does send a message, loud and clear to the others ;) Fuckin people.
